About Advantages of Age
Advantages of Age was created in March 2016, originally as a lifestyle website to provide a platform for older people who just can’t relate to the prevalent media narrative – that ageing means past-it, inadequate, invisible.
Our community celebrates growing old gracefully but is equally at home with disgracefully. We’re individuals and we all shine in our own sweet ways, now seasoned by time and experience.
Advantages of Age aims to celebrate how far we’ve all come while recognising a need to address the damaging, anti-age bias of our society.
Our Social Purpose
In 2017 Advantages of Age was incorporated as a social enterprise and, since then, has broadened its remit beyond the website to deliver programmes mainly aimed at supporting older people to discover pathways to employment.
Funded by the Big Lottery, Paul Hamlyn Foundation, TFL, Arts Council and others, the grants have enabled us to help hundreds of people aged over 50 at a crossroads in their life to explore their options and feel more positive about their future.
At the heart of AofA is a vibrant and lively community.
Our Facebook group, now with over 3.5k members, is active and engaged in discussions ranging from poetry to (rarely) politics, dancing to dating. Hosting both informal and more formal social activities, group members have recreated choreographer Pina Baulch’s infamous Nelkin Line near the Oxo Tower, a Fabulous and Flamboyant bus tour in both London and Cardiff as well as on the NYC subway! We encourage all our beneficiaries to join.
